About the Office

When you first arrive at our office, we like to have you fill out a patient history profile.

From this form we will gather pertinent information about you and why you chose to see us. We will review your Medical Health History, as well as your Dental Health History, and then perform a thorough dental and periodontal examination.

Medical History:

It is important to know if you have any health problems that may compromise your ability to have periodontal therapy. Medical conditions such as diabetes or pregnancy may make you more susceptible to gum infections. Personal habits such as smoking can promote periodontal disease, and you my be aware that there is a distinct relationship between heart attacks and pre-term births with periodontal disease.

Dental History:

We would like to know what your previous experiences with dental care have been. Have you had to have a lot of dental treatment in the past? When was your periodontal disease first diagnosed? How has it been handled? Are you apprehensive about treatment? We can address all of these issues to assess your motivation and commitment to undergo periodontal therapy.

Exam and Consultation:

We will examine your teeth and gums to determine the extent of your periodontal disease problems. We will evaluate the gums for signs of bleeding, swelling, softness and recession. We will check your teeth for movement and sensitivity, as well as evaluate your bite. A complete set of x-rays are usually necessary to be able to evaluate the bone for any pathology. If your dentist doesn’t have a complete set, we will be happy to take them during your appointment. If your dentist does have a set of x-rays, please have them send them to our office for bring them with you when you come for your appointment.

We will measure your gums with the periodontal probe to detect if there are any pockets of infection and to determine their depth.

Consultation and Treatment Plan:

After we have had a chance to review the examination findings and the x-rays, we will develop a treatment plan and present our evaluation and recommendations for restoring your mouth to a sound state of health. Treatment options include home care, non-surgical therapy and in some cases surgery. The findings will be shared with your general dentist and we will compare the potential benefits with the risks and complications to develop the plan that is best for you. We will review financial obligations and arrange a convenient method of payment. We are happy to assist you in determining what coverage you have with any dental insurance plan and will submit claims for you.
